Commissioning original art should never feel confusing or rushed. Here's exactly how it works, what it costs and what to expect along the way.
The experience

Start your story
Send an inquiry and tell me a bit about your subject, whether a pet or a person, and what you hope to capture. I'll reply personally to begin our conversation and look at your photos together.

Planning
We'll discuss the right size and layout for your piece. A 25% deposit secures your spot on my calendar and begins the design phase. I'll send mockups for you to choose from, so you love the plan before the drawing begins.

Creation
Your portrait typically takes 4–8 weeks, and I'll keep you updated as it comes to life. Because I give every portrait my full attention, I accept a limited number of commissions each season, so there may be a short wait before yours begins.

Coming home
Once the portrait is complete and the final payment is made, it's professionally matted, securely packaged with rigid backing and moisture protection, and fully insured for its value on the way to you.

Shipping
Packaged professionally with rigid backing and moisture protection, and fully insured in transit. Canada & US: Small $25 · Medium $35 · Large $45. Other destinations quoted separately.
A note for US clients
As of August 2026, original artwork shipped from Canada to the United States is subject to a 50% import tariff under Section 338, applied to the declared value of the piece. It's collected by US customs on import and is outside my control. Please factor this into your decision, and I'm always happy to answer questions.

Frequently asked
Do I need to know exactly what I want before reaching out?
Not at all. That's my job. Just tell me about your pet and send a few photos, and I'll take care of the rest.
Are your portraits really hand-drawn?
Yes, every single one, by me, in colored pencil. No AI, no machines, no shortcuts.
How long will it take?
Each portrait takes 4–8 weeks to draw. I only take a small number of commissions at a time, so there may be a wait before I start yours. I'll let you know current availability when you reach out.
How do I choose the right photo?
Send me a few of your favorites and I'll help you pick. The best photos are clear, sharp, well lit and taken at eye level. Avoid blurry, dark or flash photos. There's more in my guide to choosing photos.
What if my only photos aren't very good?
Send them anyway. Many people feel this way, especially after a sudden loss. I'll look through what you have and tell you honestly what's possible.
What if I'm not happy with the finished portrait?
I send you a mockup before I start so we're both happy with the plan. If something's not right at the end, we'll sort it out together.
How does shipping work?
Canada & US: Small $25 · Medium $35 · Large $45. Other destinations quoted separately. Everything is packaged safely and fully insured.
How long will the portrait last?
A very long time, if cared for properly. I include care instructions with every piece.
Can I commission a portrait of a person?
Yes. Just mention it in your inquiry and we can talk it through.
